Reading

I picked the article 'Text Generation Gap' which I read lately. As the name is literally, this is about the gap between parents and their children in terms of using a text message by cell phone. Parents complains their children to text message at home because it distracts their family time. I think that is common situation these days, so totally sympathize with it. The interesting part for me was that parents starts to learn how to text message from their children to conversation with their children. I thought about my parents; they can text message by themselves, but they rarely use it. Moreover, I have never thought text message can be conversation with parents but with friends. We talk on the phone almost always. I would feel awkward if I'm texting with my parents.

TV

I sometimes watch E! News. This news is all about for entertainment Singers and their songs, actors and their movies and even their gossip or rumor. The news concentrates on people and events of pop culture, I think. They shows us entertainers- singers, actors and etc-and gives us information about some events such as Music Awards or Movie Awards. This shows is from time to time good for me to know what is going on the American entertain place. However, I also think that a gossip of someone who is famous is going too far.

Glog

We went on filed trip to Chicago Cultural Center. There were a lot of brochures which introduce music concerts, book discussions, exhibitions of many genres and etc. Therefore, people can experience many events for free or paying a little bit. In the center, we met two elderly people. Both of them are very cultural old ladies and have been enjoy their life with many cultural events. During the interview with them, one sweet lady told us that all cultures are mixed in America. The other one said that her daily life is all about cultural event, saying her schedule in detail to us. Chicago Cultural Center is more like about high culture. Although I had not known about the center, it was a good chance let me feel people's cultural like thanks to this field trip.

Technology

One of the things which I cannot live out is a cell phone. I began to use it when I was 14 years old. At that time, my father just bought it for me because small cell phones just came out on the cell phone market. These days, I carry it out wherever I go even if I don't use it that much. To contact with my friends my cell phone is necessary to me. I am anxious if I don't see it because I think there is an important or emergency messages from someone. My cell phone is always with me, in my bag or hand. Sometimes, I take a picture with it and send a message and call my friends to say hello. I'd like to keep in tough with my friends listening to their voice by phone more than email or facebook.

Movies

“One of the movies we can feel a human’s true love to others!” It is also applicable to this movie, The Blind Side. The beautiful meeting between Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock), who is rich and successful white woman, and Micheal Oher (Quinton Aaron), who is poor and homeless black teenager, starts to touch our heart. Anne and her family take care of Micheal with constant love as Christians; it helps him to dream his future.

The Blind Side is a true and heartwarming story of our neighbors. Among the brutal and tough reality where we live in, this adorable movie will satisfy our chilly mind with warmth. As we take a look around and pay attention to our neighbors, we can fine something valuable in the blind side of our life which we didn’t realize. When you see Leigh Anne’s smile and her confession of happiness after finding a light in her blind side, in the movie, you can find the value as I said before. If you want to experience and learn the most important and valuable lesson in our life, this move, The Blind Side is worth watching for all ages.

Music

One of my favorite singers is Mariah Carey who has great talent. When I heard her song, Hero, for the first time, I was 17 years old. At that time, I was struggling with my study and had anxiety for the futrue, so this song gave me power to encourage me. Especailly, the lyrics of the song is heartwarming for all people who have had wether a hart time or not, I think. Mariah Carey's voice is very full and melodious. Even though she had some hard time in her childhood and marriage, she overcame successfully. I assume Mariah Carey is the singer standing for pop-music.

Cultural Identity

Here, I made this poster about Korean & American Culture.
I'd like to introduce some of them.
There is the myth that people have known that someone named Dangun and a sun of heaven founded the first nation in Korea.
One of our famous food is Kimchi. This is very popular food not only in Korea but some countries. We consider it as a pride!
We have an honorific in our language. We should respect the elders, so it's very important to use an honorific practically.
I love Mariah Carey and Johnny Depp really. Her ballad 'Hero' and 'Without You' are my favorite songs and I love his movies! Don't you think he is born to act?
The president Obama influenced both America and the other country. His talent, overcoming of race, age and ect. all bout him was an issue for a while. By being president in America , he gave a big dream,'yes, we can', not only black people but everyone.

Pop Culture

While I've stayed in America, I've experienced lots of different things from Korea so that I've not only felt those things but changed. First of all, I ask after people even I see them for the first time, saying "How are you?" I use this speech habitually whenever I meet someone. Secondly, I'm accustomed to going Starbucks almost every day and having a coffee- vanilla latte, my favorite! I rarely used to drink coffee in Korea, so this may the reason which makes me suffered from poverty in America, I think. Lastly, I've gotten to like diverse countries' food especially Thailand. Because I've never eaten Thailand food in Korea, I go Thai restaurant at least once a week after falling in love with Thai food.

During the pop culture class, I've been basically aware what pop culture is and what different between pop and high culture. I've known there are some issues of race in America as a country in which various ethnic people live. Moreover, this class let me think my culture identity seriously with doing making a poster. Thanks to song and movie project, I've paid attention more to them than before; I knew that each of them is one of the easiest elements to affect to pop culture.

Hi! My name is Emily! :)

Hi! My name is Hayoung Kim, but just call me Emily.
I'm from Korea. As a youngest in my family, I've grown up being loved from my parents and two older brothers.
Actually, this is second time to study in Chicago; I studied just English last year for 6 months. Unfortunately, I couldn't experience the Summer of Chicago, so I expect the most beautiful Summer season of Chicago.
I'm a outgoing person, but I'm a considerate person at the same time. Besides, I'm trying to be a devout Christian, so my life motto is "Love your neighbors as you love yourself."
